If the sultry supercar lines are familiar, that’s because they were taken wholesale from the 1999 Ronart Lightning. Rather than deriving its power from a Mustang engine, however, the new Lightning uses a quartet of in-wheel electric motors to produce more than 700 hp. Thundering to 60 mph in less than five seconds, the Lightning will hit a top speed of 130 mph, and cruise for some 200 miles on a full charge. But the Lightning is remarkable not merely for how quick it looks, or even for how quickly it moves, but for how quickly it recharges. The company decided to eschew lithium-ion batteries for a highly advanced nano-titanate cell (30 of them, in fact) that will charge to capacity in less than 10 minutes at special hihj-voltage charging stations. The Lightning should fetch about $240,000 when it hums into showrooms a year to 18 months from now.
