Bentley’s new flying Spur Speed just put a number of drivers on the unemployment line. The company says that 20 percent of Flying Spurs are driven by trusty old Jeeves, but this Bentley is so responsive and rewarding to drive that when the Lord of the Manor gets behind the steering wheel, the chauffeurs will not be needed.
So what separates the Speed from the standard Flying Spur? The appearance differences are subtle. The front grill and lower air intakes are massaged to give the sedan a stronger face, while the altered read bumper and larger exhausts reinforce the car’s performance oriented persona.
Underneath the skin, the changes are more substantial. Thanks largely to an increase in boost pressure, the twin turbo 5,998-cc W12 goes from 552 to 600 horsepower and torque increases from 478 to 533 lb-ft. The standard Spur’s ride height was lowered 10 mm, the anti-roll bars and spring/shock settings were massaged for less body roll and more lithe road manners, and the electronic stability control was reprogrammed to give the driver a longer leash. The wheels are unique to the model, as are the Pirelli P Zero tires that are dubbed “UHP” for ultra high performance. The optional braking system employs massive cross drilled carbon-ceramic discs. This car’s best feature is its ability to race a sports car and yet have enough space to haul a heavy family.
