Powder blue and marigold is one of the most iconic paint schemes in endurance-racing and one of the rarest. According to GT40 Registry, the car pictured in the article (chassis number p1086) is one of only five GT40 Mark 1 racecars to don the distinctive Gulf Racing livery.
The car’s ultimate status, however, has nothing to do with its paint, but by virtue of its being the last of its breed. Of the 87 Mark 1 GT40’s produced, p1086 is the final Abbey Panels chassis built by J.W Automotive Engineering. Constructed in 1967 for John Willment, who founded JWAE with partner and race engineer John Wyer, P1086 was an hommage of sorts to P1075 – the car that twice won Le Mans for the Gulf Oil team.
What makes p1086 particularly special is that this GT40 is one of the few still in it original condition. And for $5 million, it can be yours. The current owner(who asked to be anonymous) is seeking to sell partly to fund a cause. In lieu of an auction commission, he has pledged to donate 10 percent of this GT40’s private treaty sale to charities supporting veterans of Gulf wars.
The fact that America’s most famous racecar (a super power in its own right) could soon benefit the men and women who served the Persian Gulf might be considered poetic. After all, this is a Gulf car. By way of comparison, chassis P1086 (another Gulf-liveried car) changed owners in March for an estimated price slightly higher that $5 million. Of course, that car had the somewhat dubious honor of finishing in fourth place overall at Spa in 1968, whereas P1086 is still undefeated, having never actually raced.
