Are SSDs more reliable than regular hard drives?

Solid state NAND memory, which has no moving parts, is fast becoming a replacement for a traditional hard disk drive, but are worth the expense? “The mean time between failures of an HDD is 600,000 hours, versus 1 million hours or more for an SSD”, said Scott Nelson, vise president of memory marketing for Toshiba America Electronic Components, the innovator of NAND technology. “You could write 44GB every day for five years and be within the life of a 128GB solid state drive.”

Doubling the drive life span may not be worth it for something that costs more than double the price of regular HDDs, but the superior I/O speeds and dropping prices mean that, sooner or later, SSDs will be the smarter choice. In addition to a short boot time and faster application load times, you should also expect a modest increase in battery life. So the verdict is, SSDs are more reliable than the conventional hard drives.
