Nexus One vs HTC Desire

nexus-vs-desire

Though sold by Google, the Nexus One smartphone is made by HTC. It therefore comes as no surprise that the Taiwanese manufacturer will soon sell its own version of the handset, which we now know is called the HTC Desire. The main difference between the two is the interface. The Nexus One gives a pure Android experience with no modifications, while the Desire comes with HTC Sense which makes significant changes to the way you use the phone’s features. That’s not all. Have a look at our table for their main differences.

Operating system:Vanilla Android 2.1Android 2.1 with HTC Sense
Navigation:TrackballOptical trackpad
RAM:512MB576MB
HSPA frequencies:Tri-band HSPA supports T-Mobile in the US (900/1700/2,100MHz)Dual-band HSPA (900/2,100MHz)

While the differences seem small, HTC Sense alone encompasses a host of features. This includes integration with social-networking services, a lot of extra widgets and little extras such as the ability to mute the phone simply by flipping it face down.

Specifications aside, one of the biggest advantages the Desire has over the Nexus One is that HTC will most likely sell it through operators. Currently in Asia, the Nexus One is available only to residents in Singapore and Hong Kong, and that’s at full price directly from Google. There are lots of consumers who cannot (or rather, will not) pay such a price for a handset. Instead, they’d prefer to enjoy subsidized handset rates from operators in exchange for their contractual promise to use the provider’s service for a specific number (usually two) of years.

Those who have been holding back from getting a Nexus One for reasons of unavailability and cost now have another option. You do have to wait till Q2 before The Desire starts to go on sale, but that isn’t too distant considering we’re already in mid-February.
