Time to update a classic that updated a classic. Imagine this: two rival gangs, one named the Jets and one named the Sharks. They live in Anytown, and any time they meet, they rumble. And dance a bit. And when they rumble, they pull out their Butterfly Knife-Styled Pens and show off their tricks. Why? Because this pen can flip and spin and write and it’s just plain awesome. And, as you know, the pen is mightier than the sword. (more…)

While most of us are delighted by the idea of bringing the outdoors in, we are equally excited by the concept of bringing the indoors outside! These “lawnge chairs” get the job done. Designed by artist Lisette Spee in collaboration with architect Tim Van Den Burg, the playful seats are part of a series of lounge chairs created for public spaces in Valkenberg Park in Breda, Netherlands. It’s an eco-friendly clock from Bedol that runs entirely on water. Just fill the tank with water, add a splash of lemon juice and the clock runs for 6-8 weeks with no electricity needed. It has a built in memory chip so you don’t lose the time while changing the water.

Vintage USB drive. (Credit: Bertrand Planes) If you’ve a thing for nostalgia, this antique music box has a pretty modern spin–a USB drive. What we couldn’t figure out was whether this Music Box USB is capable of producing any tinkles, digital or otherwise, or if it’s just a husk. All that the literature onsite says is it’s an iron music box modified into a USB drive. Designer Bertrand Planes has also attempted to add more functionality by imbuing the top lever with the scroll wheel properties of a mouse. Not a very ergonomic choice, which may account for only five of these music boxes being released as limited-edition collectibles. For all else, such as storage capacity and price, you’ll have to buzz Mr Planes since it’s only on request. (more…)

I’ve been on a quest for a functional and affordable desk over the last few months and I think I found it. It’s no Milk desk, but the StudioDesk appears to suit my needs just fine.
I can’t attest to the quality of the BlueLounge desk, but the features are appealing to a nerd. A hidden compartment holds most of your power doodads so as not to clutter your desktop. A slit running just short of the width of the desk allows for cables to enter and exit and only one cable exits the desk to plug into the wall. (more…)

Calling all aesthetes – literally, in this case. The product od a collaboration between design specialists Alessi and Telecom Italia, the aptly named ‘AlessiPhone’ is a cordless telephone for those who value form as much as function. The receiver and base are shaped to mirror one another and fit together seamlessly when in standby.
Finished in polycarbonate, the polished white exterior contrasts nicely with the similarly shiny black that surrounds the OLED screen and keyboard array on the other side, the latter of which is illuminated by a blue back light. Once you are done looking at it and actually start using the thing, you can then take advantage of an internal contact book with space for 200 entries, a hands-free mode and a series of polyphonic ringtones composed by noted Japanese beatmeister Gak Sato. Just one more reason to not ditch that land line quite yet.
