They’re not using some ordinary flaming stick for the Olympic torch. The talisman of the 2010 Winter Games, carried all over Greece and Canada since October 30, 2009, is literally way-cool. Its flame burns at the lowest temperature of any Olympic torch in history, thanks to its fuel mixture of propane and the refrigerant isobutane. (more…)

In fact, the groundshaking effects can take a realistic turn, quite literally, with the country’s CJ-CGV multiplexes tapping all five senses with moving seats, explosive smoke, water sprinklers and laser lights to immerse you in the world of Pandora. New York’s Governor’s Island is set to receive an incredible set of renovations that will transform the 172-acre plot of decaying Coast Guard structures into a stunning eco-park. Designed by West 8, Diller Scofidio + Renfro, and Rogers Marvel Architects, the project is a hybrid of landscape and architecture based around a sinuous set of new paths, watercourses, restaurants, aquaria and even complimentary wooden bicycles. Slated for completion in 2012, the ambitious, new and improved Governors Island will incorporate a host of environmentally friendly features. (more…)

Last year, the Times Square Ball got an LED makeover for its 100th anniversary. This year that tradition continues, all 32,256 Philips Luxeon Rebel LEDs of it (and don’t forget the 2,668 Waterford crystals). The 12-foot-wide, 11,875-pound ball is capable of displaying “16 million vibrant colors and billions of patterns” — did you even know that many colors existed? — and all in all it’ll use 20% less energy than last year.
