An expected 25 million units will be produced through the end of this year.

Apple’s sales estimates of the new iPhone is quite aggressive. It told us to prepare to help the company meet its goal of 25 million units by the end of the year,” said another person at one of Apple’s suppliers. “The initial production volume will be a few million units… we were told to ship the components to assembler Hon Hai in August.

It’s been also rumored that the new iPhone will be almost the same as the current iPhone 4 but more thinner and lighter, although Apple’s manufacturing partner Foxconn/Hon Hai is having difficulties on the new device due to it being “complicated and difficult to assemble.” Two of the people, however, cautioned that shipments of the new iPhone could be delayed if Hon Hai can’t improve its yield rate as the new iPhone is “complicated and difficult to assemble.

Shown here is the iPhone SLR Mount which gives you the real thing. This case-adapter combo lets you mount your Canon EOS or Nikon SLR lenses to your iPhone 4 which will give the phone the ability of field depth and manual focus just like regular DSLRs. Any lens you own can attach to this mount, providing versatility with a full range of lenses to use with your iPhone. To ensure security, two loopholes on each end of the case let you tie on a camera strap, so you can hang it around your neck just like an actual DSLR.

Priced at $190 USD, both Canon and Nikon mounts are available now through Photojojo.

We will have up to the minute updates regarding features and availability as they surface.

Russian Security Firm Breaks iOS Encryptionhttp://gizmoave.com/2011/05/26/russian-security-firm-breaks-ios-encryption/ http://gizmoave.com/2011/05/26/russian-security-firm-breaks-ios-encryption/#comments Thu, 26 May 2011 05:36:21 +0000 admin http://gizmoave.com/?p=3747 You know that iPhone you are holding. The one with the password and encryption. I hate to tell you, but it’s been cracked.

Russian security firm Elcomsoft is behind this crack and the team over there is smart. They took a brute-force password cracker and bundled it with a decryption tool that uses established methods to crack iOS devices. The firm is now selling the toolset commercially to individuals, governments and law enforcement.

If a thief gets a hold of your iPad or encrypted iTunes backup, don’t worry about it spilling all your secrets. Elcomsoft will only sell the decryption tool to official agencies like law enforcement and the system needs both your backup and the iOS device to get any sensitive information.

Yeah, the password cracker may be available to anyone with a credit card, but a thief would have to be pretty hard-core to wait for a brute-force attack to guess the right combination. That’s assuming you didn’t take the easy was out by using a simple passcode like 1-2-3-4. [Ars Technica]

Word Lens Automagically Translates and Displays Translationshttp://gizmoave.com/2010/12/17/word-lens-automagically-translates-and-displays-translations/ http://gizmoave.com/2010/12/17/word-lens-automagically-translates-and-displays-translations/#comments Fri, 17 Dec 2010 12:58:09 +0000 lambert v. http://technabob.com/blog/?p=45283 Otavio Good and John DeWeese worked for two and a half years to produce a program that, to paraphrase Arthur C. Clarke’s famous line, is indistinguishable from magic. Good and DeWeese’s app Word Lens is a essentially an OCR (optical character recognition) program. But unlike other OCR software, Word Lens not only translate visual text but also projects the translated text in place of the original one, in real time:

The app can also spell words in reverse or even erase words from a picture. As you can see, the translation isn’t perfect, but it’s way better than nothing. This single app justifies the existence of a smartphone with a camera. And it is available right this instant – you can grab Word Lens at the iTunes App Store now. The app itself is free, but the language packs cost $5 (USD) each and are in-app purchases. Currently only two language packs exist, Spanish to English and English to Spanish, but you can bet that Good and DeWeese will add more. Star Trek fans will no doubt wait for the Klingon pack.

Word Lens: Augmented Reality App Translates Street Signs Instantlyhttp://gizmoave.com/2010/12/17/word-lens-augmented-reality-app-translates-street-signs-instantly/ http://gizmoave.com/2010/12/17/word-lens-augmented-reality-app-translates-street-signs-instantly/#comments Fri, 17 Dec 2010 10:13:27 +0000 Charlie Sorrel http://www.wired.com/gadgetlab/?p=55489 Word Lens for the iPhone is one of the most amazing apps we have ever seen. Take a look at this, but put down any hot liquids first.

It’s an augmented-reality, OCR-capable translation app, but that’s a poor description. A better one would be “magic.” World Lens looks at any printed text through the iPhone’s camera, reads it, translates between Spanish and English. That’s pretty impressive already — it does it in real time — but it also matches the color, font and perspective of the text, and remaps it onto the image. It’s as if the world itself has been translated.

Impressed? You’re not the only one. John Gruber of Daring Fireball puts it best: “[It's] as though near-future time travelers started sending us apps instead of Terminators.”

We’ve tested the app, and it works just as shown in the video. In demo mode, it can rearrange (or blank out) any text in the camera’s field of vision. You need to purchase translation packs to do the actual translation.

In our tests, it worked smoothly, although the words had a tendency to wiggle around a bit, switching between English and Spanish and flipping between alternate translations. You could get the gist of a sentence, but not read it clearly. Holding the camera very steady helped mitigate the “wiggling” effect.

Word Lens is a taste of science fiction, something like a visual version of the universal translator or the Babelfish. Only instead of being a convenient device to avoid movie subtitles, it’s a real, functioning tool.

Word Lens is free, and will do some fancy rearranging of words to show you how it works. The Spanish-English and English-Spanish dictionaries are in-app purchases, for $5 each, and the app runs offline — perfect for when you’re traveling. You can pick your coffee back up, now.
