MSI’s X-Slim X600 may not be the quickest, most nimble or most powerful 15.6-inch laptop on the market today, bit with a thickness of just 0.75-inches, it’s definitely got the ultrathin motif down pat. The kind lads and ladies over at Laptop Mag recently secured one of the machines for review, and they seemed adequately impressed with the combination of a low-power CPU (1.4GHz Core 2 Solo SU3500) and a multimedia-friendly discrete GPU (ATI’s 512MB Radeon HD 4330) — a tandem that’s hard to find anywhere, let alone for $799. All told, the machine performed satisfactorily across the board, notching decent scores in a wide array of benchmarks and looking good all the while. Still, critics noted that Sony’s VAIO NW would be more suitable for those with a Blu-ray craving and that Gateway’s $599 NV is probably better for those looking for raw horsepower. If style is atop your list, though, it’ll be tough to dodge the “buy” button on this one.

The PeeWee Laptop is a toughened, water resistant notebook computer which is designed for toddlers of 5 years and up. Technically it’s awright, with an Atom processor, 30GB disk, 1GB of RAM and WiFi. Unfortunately the company has no specification listed as to peanut butter and Jello resistance, so it’s definitely a purchase of faith if your little terror suffers from an inquisitive nature. Dell’s been taking its design new directions for a while now, but it looks the company’s war on boring is about to get personal.Ed Boyd, Dell’s new Industrial Design Director, told BusinessWeek that Dell also plans on launching customizable computers with “scores of colors, patterns, and textures,” and options that will “go far beyond the handful of choices available” from most rivals. We assume he just means the exterior, though that’s unclear, so we’ll keep our fingers crossed for that hot pink keyboard. There are also no details yet on which models will be up for customization or their pricing, but the other Art House models range from $649 to $800, so our uncle probably won’t have to break the bank to unveil his edgy laptop graffiti when these hit sometime next year. Can’t hardly wait.

Entering a crowded mini-notebook field, Lenovo delivers an eye-catching, full-featured system in the 2.4-pound IdeaPad S10. Loaded with Intel’s Atom processor and Window XP Home, the 1-inch-thin S10 comes with your choice of an 80 GB or 160 GB hard drive (with 512 MB or 1GB of RAM, respectively), and a classic white, bold block, or glossary ruby red chassis. It’s equipped with two USB ports, an ExpressCard slot, a webcam, and a 4-in-1 memory card reader.

Lenovo wisely drove straight for a 10.2-inch, energy efficient LED-backlit display, paired with a comfortable 85 percent (size keyboard and a multi-touch) capable touchpad. The company even claims
to have reduced heat emission around the keys and the underside of the system, an issue that has plagued other mini-notebooks. We really like Lenovo’s OneKey Rescue System, which helps users recover data at the touch of a button.
